Nurses make up the majority of care givers in the healthcare industry and are essential to providing quality treatment to the patients. India's healthcare sector is in need of qualified nurses who are not only technically sound but also have specialised skills in various fields and are up to date on the most recent medical technology.
Overall there are 1,200 institutions in India providing various levels of education in health, including certificate courses, diplomas, undergraduate and post-graduate courses with the duration ranging from 1 year for some diploma courses to 5 years for a regular undergraduate course. The need for qualified and skilled Nurses is very high and the recent Covid crisis highlighted the great role played by them. India is facing an acute shortage of trained nurses that results in the loss of many precious lives. According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report published last year, India would require at least 4.2 million more trained nurses by 2024 to take care of its over 1.44 billion expected population.
It is in this context that the Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam directed Shri Sankara Kripa Educational and Medical Trust, Kanchipuram to take up the nursing education exclusively for girls covering rural population of Kanchipuram District. The Trust has started Sankara College of Nursing (Women) at Kanchipuram as per Government of Tamilnadu G.O. (MS) No.585 dated 30.12.2020, in a make shift building. The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University approved & allotted 60 seats to start B.Sc. Nursing Course from 2021-2022. In 2021-22, 2022-2023 and 2023-24 all three batches have been fully subscribed.
The College which is exclusively for Women has been setup to provide qualitative training to deserving women seeking a career in Healthcare, and meets and exceeds every requirement to deliver value. The College has an excellent in-house faculty of highly competent and qualified teaching staff who are committed and excited to be part of the journey to produce outstanding graduates. It is affiliated with Sankara Multi Speciality Hospital, a 100-bed modern, well equipped hospital providing yeoman service to the population in and around Kanchipuram. The trainees are thus assured an outstanding opportunity to become fully trained in all aspects of Nursing both from a theoretical and practical perspective.

Sankara Rural Medical Centre, Thandalam

This has been established at the birth place of the present Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Jagadguru Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal. This Medical Centre built with the CSR funds from Canara Bank was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of Tamilnadu, Sri Banwarilal Purohit on 11th July, 2021. This Centre is working towards providing a much needed service to the suffering humanity in Thandalam and surrounding areas and has become popular in the area. The centre tied up for advanced speciality medical support with Chettinad Medical College, Chennai, and functions from 2.00pm to 8.00 pm daily and on an average 1000 patients are treated every month.
This Centre provides free / subsidized medical services including the supply of medicines. An Ambulance has also been stationed for emergency service. Monthly eye screening camps are conducted in this Centre and 20+ villagers are selected and given free cataract surgery at Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal.
